EVENTS 2008:

Joe Nall 2008

The TCRCAM was well represented at this years huge Joe Nall big bird fly-in at Triple Tree Airdrome in Woodruff, SC from May 11 to May 18, 2008.  Larry and Mary King and son Larry King, Jr and wife LuAn (they flew in from Seattle, WA for the week), Jerry and Sue Wickline and Larry and Jane Honigman attended this huge event.  Budd and Tracy Inziello had planned to attend also, but cancelled out at the last minute for medical problems due to his recent surgery.  Budd is fine now.  As of Saturday May 17th, 603 pilots from all over the world had registered to fly at this week long event. The largest turnout ever. We arrived before noon on Sunday May 11th, (event was to start on Wednesday May 14th), accompanied by Larry and Mary in their motor home and were surprised to find that over 100 motor homes and travel trailers were already set up and the flight line was already full. We elected to pass up the regular flight line and instead fly float planes off the lake.  We found a choice spot to park that gave us a wonderful view of the lake and also a great view of the regular flight line. This year, a new flight line was set up on this 400 acre site to accommodate 3D flyers only and took some of the pressure off the original flight line.  A new bathhouse and gazebo was in partial operation.  Friday night was the huge BBQ.  1000 tickets were sold and all 1000 hungry flyers were served (listen to this) in just 20 minutes.  The menu was peel and eat shrimp, pulled pork BBQ and BBQ chicken with all the "fixins". All you can drink beer and sodas were included.  I lost my Mariner 120 on the first flight when I was temporarily blinded by the sun, but I was back in the air after a few hours, when I bought a Mariner 40 to replace my larger Mariner.  Larry King and son Larry, logged many flights during the week on his two big Cubs and his new Mariner 120.  Generally, the weather cooperated except for a couple days of high winds when only the very brave flew. Flyers and visitors were welcome to stroll down Vendors Row where about 30 tents were set up, and each day the noon-time demos by some of worlds top pilots, thrilled the huge crowds that packed the flight line. Of note, were two German pilots flying close formation acrobatics in their big turbine powered jets, and world champion QuiQue Somenzini performing his aerobatic routine.  This is the biggest RC event in the world.  Next year when the middle of May rolls around, and the price of fuel has dropped down to a more reasonable price, plan to attend this huge RC spectacular.  Reasonably priced hotels and motels are close by.

Warbirds Over Paradise:

Budd Inziello, Larry Honigman and Jerry Wickline represented the TCRCAM at the Warbirds Over Paradise event at Cape Coral on Friday and Saturday January 18, 19, 2008.  Over 40 pilots registered to fly.  Grey skies and warm temperatures prevailed throughout the the event, but the wind didn't appear until late Saturday afternoon.  Even though the sun didn't shine, it didn't stop the flying, as the flightline was busy with four airplanes in the air at all times.  A cold front moved through Saturday night and dropped the temperature into the mid 40's, which made it a cold and windy day for the Rseahawks Annual Swap Meet on Sunday morning.  Still, about 15 tables were set up as the sellers braved the very cold and very windy morning.

Winter Festival Of The Giants:

Larry King, Budd Inziello and Jerry Wickline attended the Winter Festival of Giants at the Deland, Fl City Airport on February 21,22,23,and 24th, 2008.  We were plagued with cold, rain, wind and heat the whole four days, but still managed to get in flights every day.  Temperatures varied from a low of 44 degrees to a high 85 degrees.  Attendance was down somewhat from years past, but still about 50 pilots registered to brave the wind and rain.

TCRCAM Float Fly:

The TCRCAM Float Fly scheduled for Easter Sunday March 23, 2008 was cancelled at the last minute due to rainy weather.  Still several members from the Sundancers and few TCRCAM members showed up and braved the rainy weather.  Larry King flew his 1/3 scale Cub and made several attempts to get airborne with his white 1/4 scale Cub, but despite several high speed runs he could not get it to lift off the water.  He plans to change the wing incidence and try again another time.  Jerry Wickline logged three successful flights on his 120 Lanier Mariner, powered by a Zenoah G-23.  Budd Inziello arrived late but left his airplane in the car when a rain shower passed overhead.  A few other club members showed up to see what was going on, but left their airplanes home. The wind was a dead calm and the pond surface was "glassy slick".  The sun was hidden behind low clouds and provided perfect flying conditions, except for the rain.

Sundancers 17th Annual Big Bird Fly In:

The weather was perfect, the temperature was in the low 80's and the wind (when there was any) was right down the runway.  The Sundancer"s 17the Annual Big Bird Fly-In at their Port St Lucie, Midway Road flying site on March 28, 29 and 30, 2008 was a huge success.  Although attendance was down somewhat from previous years, over 40 pilots registered to brave the perfect flying conditions.  TCRCAM members Jerry Wickline, John Kelly, Jacque Mittendorf, Larry Honigman, Budd Inziello and Larry King each logged several flights each day.  Even though the air was filled with airplanes from 9:00AM to 3:00PM each day, only one significant crash occurred.  A midair collision between two P-51's during a six ship P-51 gaggle resulted in the total loss for Ivan Gutierras's P-51.  His flying buddies pitched in and donated a NIB Top Flite P-51 to replace his loss.  The other P-51 landed with only moderate damage.  Jack DeLisle did a great job on the microphone and added interesting commentary during the event.  Ken Frehafer was busy with his video and still cameras and his handiwork will show up on the Sundancer's web site, http://sundancersrconline.org in a few days.  Check it out. A Visit To The Top Of The World:

T.C.R.C.A.M. was represented at the “Big Bird Fly-In at the community of “On Top Of the World” IMAA Chapter which is near Ocala, Fl.  Members Courtney Payne and Chuck McGlynn went to the event on Saturday 29 March to represent TCRCAM and The Martin County Magnums, our local IMAA Chapter.  Leaving on Saturday morning and arriving three hours later, set up the tent, registered as participating pilots, assembled the aircraft and (after a short break), started flying.  Courtney was flying his red and white “Edge” 540 powered by a 3W-106 engine.  The twenty-eight pound, 108 inch W/S aircraft flew great.  Chuck McGlynn flew his beautiful new quarter-scale .91 Saito 4-cycle glow powered RV-4. It was also his bird’s maiden voyage guide by a new Futaba “Spectrum” radio.  People who had met us last year for the event welcomed us back and made us feel really at home at this excellent facility.  We set up next to David Laven (who is our Regional IMAA District 5 Director) and met his lovely wife.  David was busy with a monster Stearman with a red and white livery.  It had smoke and was scale to the bone.  A beautiful custom bipe with cowling and wheel pants He was the guy you want to be next to on a flight line, especially if you are a stranger and know only a few people.  Each year on Saturday the Fly-In ends at 3:00 PM and then anyone is welcome to fly.  The field was empty and Chuck and I continued to fly!  The sun was down low when a couple of hot, sun-burned, guys decide to strike camp and call it quits.  I actually think both aircraft were ready for a well-earned break.   For the second year it was a wonderful event and we were treated very well by everyone.  Reporter Courtney Payne, Pictures by Chuck McGlynn
